Al-Ansari Foundation

Give Time

Like every other charity, donations are of course a vital lifeline to charities. However, if you do not have the funds to donate then you should not feel you cannot help, because you can always volunteer and get involved in fundraising.

Volunteering is a popular way of supporting charities. In 2013, we launched a volunteer placement programme encouraging people to visit Zanzibar to work on our projects. As a volunteer you choose in advance the projects you wish to work on and seek sponsors to raise funds to complete the projects whilst you are out there.

Who should Volunteer?

It is a humbling experience for those who have not experienced poverty and wish to help the poor and needy. It is an ideal placement for those who are typically enthusiastic, hard-working, self-motivated, and proactive, You need to be able to work on your own initiative and as part of a team with staff in Zanzibar.

The Volunteer Programme

It is really up to you what you become involved in and it is better if you can find your own ‘niche.’  You can take some classes and teach in our school in Bumbwini or Kizimkazi, and meet some of our orphans. We have orphan home builds, boat build and water projects, and food distribution programmes.  You can even search for a deserving project of your own on either Zanzibar or its sister islands and come back home and fundraise for it.

The Fundraising challenge

As a charity our objective is to fundraise enabling us to contribute to new projects and to maintain current ones. Inviting volunteers to Zanzibar not only gives the volunteer a chance to experience charity work first-hand, but it also enables us to raise crucial funds needed to continue our work.

Any project in which you are involved must be sustainable (and also easily replicated) so that locals can continue to run it themselves. Our volunteers are currently working on a fisheries project to empower locals with a livelihood and to secure a regular income for our schools so that eventually they can become self-sufficent.

The minimum sponsorship (what you have to raise) for our projects is as follows:

1) Fisheries Boat Build Project: £4582 ($7555)

2) Orphan Home Build: £1800 ($2965)

3) Water Project on Island of Pemba: £1825 ($3,000)

We will arrange accommodation for you in Zanzibar, collect you from your airport, and ensure that you have a guide for the duration of your trip. Whilst out there you will not only get to work on the project for which you have fundraised, but you will also be given a full tour of the Island and of all Al-Ansari projects, and meet some of our orphans.  However, you will be responsible for your flights and living expenses. There is a £250 registration fee, which is non-refundable.
