Give Water

Al-Ansari Foundation / Give Water
Water Crisis

It is a well-known fact that millions of people lack access to clean water in Africa. We are dedicated to contributing to solving the water crisis in East Africa, and in particular, Zanzibar. We have installed water wells throughout Zanzibar’s remote villages and its neighbouring islands.

People travel many hours a day in search of water on Zanzibar Island, but those who have no water on the smaller islands must travel across the sea daily to collect water from government taps on larger islands, which are quite often switched off for several weeks or even months at a time.

Why Give Water?

Aside from the humanitarian rationale that needs no introduction, there are numerous ahadith on the virtues of giving people water among which is a narration by Sa’d ibn ‘Ubada (radi allahu anhu), who said:

Messenger of Allah! Umm Sa`d my mother died, what is the best charity (on her behalf)?” The Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wasalam) replied: “Water.” So Sa’d dug a well and said: “This is for Umm Sa’d.

If you wish to donate to this project and multiply your rewards by investing in the best charity you can possibly give, do not delay, donate now and give water to the needy.

Water Wells

When we install a water well, we train people on how to maintain them and keep the water supply clean and free of pollutants. A village leader is designated towards the care and attention of each well. Our deep bore hole water wells provide users with water for an unlimited number of years.

Water is extracted via an electric motor to a 5,000 litre water tank which we install together with taps around the water tower, an electric and plumbing water board so the water is easily accessible. In rural areas, our water towers are a lifeline for the inhabitants of Zanzibar island.

A full water tower costs £2,500 and can be dedicated to a loved one.  You can also fundraise between family and friends to help share in the reward of the cost of building a water well. You can come and complete the build and open your well in Zanzibar and meet the people who will benefit.

Providing water wells are Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity) for as long as the well supplies water – even after one’s death. We now provide fresh clean drinking water to over 14,500 people on a daily basis. Anas bin Malik reported he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say:

Seven deeds that their reward is still written for a person even after he dies in his grave; a knowledge he taught to others, fixing a river, digging a well, planting a palm tree, building a masjid or having a child that makes dua’a for him

What can you do to help?

Water projects are very popular and the returns on these are significant given the continuous benefit one can derive from water wells. If you wish to donate and fundraise for us, it is easy to get involved and you can donate towards a water well for £2,400.

You do not have to raise this money yourself, it can be a combined effort from you and your family or you can easily raise the money amongst a group of friends. You could consider raising the money by also creating an online event via My Donate.
